Description/Abstract: This 75-page pdf is a text book used in the Horace Mann school of Teachers College. The book presents a detailed method of procedure for the teaching of reading. The guiding principle of the method presented in the book has been stated in Dr. Huey's words: "The child loves a story, loves to get somewhither in what is said, wants an outcome to the discussion." The "background of familiarity" feature provided by the oral story is the most important contribution of the Elson-Runkel method of the pedagogy of reading.
