Description/Abstract: August Databases: Reading and Writing

In recognition of the long-running summer institutes of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, we highlight select relevant resources:

Children's Literature Comprehensive Database contains catalog records in MARC format that have children's headings assigned. These records come with all of the official cataloging data, subject terms, and annotations. In addition, the database contains critical reviews of thousands of children's books, ranging from the earliest baby board books to novels and nonfiction for young adults. CLCD allows you to search by reader and genre; author and publisher; and reading metrics (exile range, Scholastic interest and reading levels; Scholastic point range; ATOS text complexity; accelerated reader points), in addition to keyword and other typical search criteria.

Education Full Text provides comprehensive coverage of an international range of English-language periodicals, monographs, and yearbooks. Indexing coverage begins June 1983; abstracts are included beginning spring 1994; full text of some journals is available beginning in January 1996.

Education Research Complete provides indexing and abstracts for more than 2,100 journals, as well as full text for more than 1,200 journals, and includes full text for nearly 500 books and monographs.

ERIC is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education to provide extensive access to educational-related periodical literature. ERIC (which stands for Educational Resources Information Center) provides coverage of conferences, meetings, government documents, theses, dissertations, reports, audiovisual media, bibliographies, directories, books, and monographs. It includes lessons plans and teaching materials. In addition to this version, made available via the ProQuest platform, ERIC is also accessible via the U.S. government ERIC site and through Ebsco ERIC.

Horn Book Guide publishes short, critical reviews of virtually every hardcover trade book published in the United States for young people. it is searchable by author, illustrator, title, subject, and bibliographic data, as well as by rating assigned the book in the original Horn Book review. The Horn Book Guide Online is ideal for teachers building a classroom library or recommending books to students and parents; for librarians serving a school-wide community of readers and teachers; and for pre-service instructors helping new teachers understand how to match books to readers.

Humanities Full Text includes many of the most important academic journals in the humanities with the full text of articles from over 300 periodicals dating back to 1995, and high-quality indexing for almost 700 journals, of which 470 are peer-reviewed, dating as far back as 1984. The database provides coverage of feature articles, interviews, bibliographies, obituaries, and original works of fiction, drama, poetry and book reviews, as well as reviews.

JStor provides page images of back issues of the core scholarly journals in the humanities and social sciences from the earliest issues to within a few years of current publication. Users may browse by journal title or discipline, or may search the full-text or citations/abstracts. New issues of existing titles and new titles are added on an ongoing basis.

Kraus Curriculum Development Library Online is a database of currricula, frameworks, and standards brings together educational objectives, content, instructional strategies, and evaluative techniques for all subjects covered in PreK-12 and Adult Basic Education. You can query the Title/Annotation field; use keywords (based on the Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors); limit to type of educational content (e.g. educational legislation, glossaries, lesson plans); and also search by issuing agency (e.g. sate departments of education; school districts; individual schools; regional educational consortia; special projects within colleges and universities; government agencies; and professional associations).

Literature Online is a fully searchable library of English and American poetry, drama, and prose, plus biographies, bibliographies, and key secondary sources.

Oxford Encyclopedia of Children's Literature provides brief biographies of more than 300 authors and illustrators, as well as essays on all genres of children's literature, individual works, and prominent trends and themes, including general essays on the traditions of children's literature in many countries throughout the world.

Professional Development Collection is designed for professional educators, this database provides a highly specialized collection of nearly 520 high-quality education journals, including more than 350 peer-reviewed titles. The database also contains more than 200 educational reports.

SIRS Researcher, a Proquest resource, provides news sources, magazines, and articles that cover trending topics and issues in politics and international affairs. Designed for secondary school students, it includes opposing viewpoints to generate discussion. It also links to curriculum standards, Common Core, so that teachers can familiarize and then find topics, websites, and articles that match state curriculum standards.

TeachingBooks is an award-winning library and collection of materials designed to bring books alive, offering a vetted collection of instructional materials about children's and young adult books and author. It contains lesson plans, vocabulary lists, author interviews, — organized by grade levels, curriculum areas, genres.
