Description/Abstract: This paper will examine the education and community engagement programming at five Colorado based performing arts festivals located in resort communities in an effort to unpack the relationships between the festivals, community partners, and quality of life in the region. Aspen Music Festival and School, Theatre Aspen, Bravo! Vail Music Festival, Vail International Dance Festival, and Strings Music Festival capitalize on an audience of tourists, second home owners, and year round residents. Interviews with professionals from these five organizations form the basis for exploring the festivals perception of community, how that perception translates into strategic education and community engagement programming decisions, and how the festivals conceptualize their roles and contributions to the region. Questions surrounding accessibility and the role of arts education within communities connect this research to broader themes and issues of importance to the field.
