Description/Abstract: News Display: The Great Barrier Reef Is Discovered, Monday, 6/11 Famous for its beautiful coral and abundance of sea life, the Great Barrier Reef is discovered by British navigator and explorer, Captain James Cook on June 11, 1770 when his ship runs aground. It is located in the Coral Sea and off the coast of Queensland, north-east Australia and is named a World Heritage site for its outstanding natural importance to humankind. Stories will document the discovery, exploration, use, and conservation of the Great Barrier Reef with relevance for the teaching of science and social studies. |
