Education of John Darden, The (AE News Special Report)

After witnessing his father's suicide at age nine, Darden was drawn into the most violent and criminal elements of life in the South Bronx. It was not until more than 10 years after his father's death – in a maximum security prison – that he encountered other father figures. These older prisoners managed to do what John wishes his father would have done: convince him to leave his life as a gang banger and a hustler behind.

Muslim Youth (AE News Special Report)

Congrats to all the student authors and all the folks at Student Press Initiative on the publication of "This is Where I Need to be."

The book presents oral histories of Muslim teens throughout New York City. The SPI describes the book this way:

"These are voices of teens living ordinary lives at a time when being Muslim in America can provoke 'extraordinary' reactions from classmates and teachers, from friends and strangers, or even from one's own family and kin. Whatever you think you know about Muslims in America, these stories rise above the stereotypes and open a personal window onto what it means to be young and Muslim.

Watch our AE Special Report on this book.
