Archives of the Department of Nursing Education The Archives of the Department of Nursing Education of Teachers College, Columbia University, one of the most comprehensive manuscript collections on the history of American nursing as well as on major developments in nursing internationally, traces its origin to the nineteenth century. From the inception of the Hospital Economics Course in the Department of Domestic Sciences in 1899 through the expansion of the nursing education program in the twentieth century, the faculty preserved the records of their pioneering endeavor. The collection and preservation of these records was a major interest of Professor Mary Adelaide Nutting from her first coming to Teachers College in 1906 until her retirement in 1925.
Nutting's associate and successor Isabel Maitland Stewart continued the practice of collecting and documenting her own and the department's activities. Stewart served as custodian of the records collected by Nutting and herself until 1963 when, by her will, they were donated to Teachers College. These records were held in the Division of Nursing Education until 1978 when they were transferred to Special Collections, Teachers College Library. In turn, her successor, R. Louise McManus, maintained the policy of assembling the records of her directorship and the activities of the department down to 1961. These records were added to the departmental collection and were transferred to the library in 1978. Additional components of the nursing collection were received hy the library at various times between 1978 and 1981.
In addition, the papers of several members of the Department's faculty and the records of special projects were added to the collection. Among these were the extensive collection of Mildred L. Montag, the records of the Institute of Research and Service in Nursing Education, and the records of the Mental Health and Work of the School Nurse projects. It is this collection of materials that constitutes the basis of the Department of Nursing Education Archives. Created By: Digitization Depot
