Erling Hunt was head of the department of the teaching of social science at Teachers College. As a member of the board of directors, and as editor of Social Education for more than a decade, he was one of the guiding forces behind the National Council for the Social Studies. Dr. Hunt came to Teachers College in 1931 as an Assistant Professor of Education; was appointed Director of the Division of Instruction in 1964; and became Professor Emeritus of History on the Jacob H. Schiff Foundation in 1966. He died on September 28, 1978.
