Our age of educational accountability has created a classroom where our students' time is increasingly spent preparing for standardized assessments. This emphasis has often narrowed the scope of classroom experience, limiting creative instincts and our students' opportunities to pursue their passions.
Fortunately, there are programs like YOUNGARTS that recognize, support and develop the creative minds of our future. In its more than 30 years of service to the arts community, YOUNGARTS selects the nation's best young artists to participate in workshops with masters of cinematic arts, dance, jazz, music, photography, theater, visual arts and voice. YOUNGARTS' MASTERCLASS series captures the moments between these young artists and the masters who mentor them.
The study guide for Pursuing Your Passion: Lessons from YOUNGARTS' MASTERCLASS grows out of a need for educators across the country to embrace the arts in all academic disciplines. Through the lens of YOUNGARTS' MASTERCLASS episodes, classroom teachers can encourage their students to explore their artistic potential while they utilize the 21st Century Skills of creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and communication. In this study guide, you will find essential question that frame the exploration of YOUNGARTS' MASTERCLASS episodes and specific questions that connect to the Humanities, Math and Science, and Visual and Performing Arts. Sample activities for each essential question either span the disciplines or focus on a kill related to one specific discipline. Classroom teachers may choose to focus on a particular artist or genre from YOUNGARTS' MASTERCLASS series, or apply the essential questions thematically to a broad range of academic and creative experiences with several of YOUNGARTS' MASTERCLASS episodes. Both experiences invite students in grades 7-12 to explore and reflect upon their own creative potential and the relationships, practices, and dispositions that help them pursue their passions.
